Cascades, Domes, Sacred Baobab.
CASCADES
Banfora has a lot to offer. The Cascades are beautiful waterfalls. This was the beginning of the dry season. The water level varies depending on the season and can change in a matter of hours. When we went into the area some of the crossings were dry, but after a few hours of exploring, the water had increased forcing us to take a completely different way out.
This particular crossing was dry on the way in.
DOMES
The Domes are rock formations over 500 years old. A favorite place to go hiking. The views from the top are amazing.
BAOBAB
The Sacred Baobab tree is huge. The locals believe the spirit of the tree keeps the village healthy and protected. During times of unrest the women and children take refuge in the trunk of the tree. The fruit is edibal but not eaten from this tree. Most of the time the tree is leafless. There are many story surrounding the Baobab. Some legends say that God Thora took a dislike to the Baobab growing in his garden, so he threw it out over the wall of Paradise on to Earth below, and although the tree landed upside-down it continued to grow. Another story goes that when the Baobab was planted by God it kept walking around. God pulled it up and replanted it upside down to stop it from moving. Still another states that the tree was boasting how it was the most beautiful tree of all, so God pulled it up and planted it upside down to teach the mighty tree humility.
Taken from inside the tree looking up. The hole is natural ventilation.
